Theatrical Odessa is vivid and diverse: there are seven theaters and a Philharmonic Hall in the city. One of them is rated as ‘National' and three as 'Academic'.
Theater has played a significant place in the city's life as far back as the first decade of the 19 century with the very beginning of Odessa's development. Exiled here in 1823, Aleksandr Pushkin visited the Opera each evening and dedicated quite a number of lines in "Yevgeniy Onegin" to it:
