Many of the great actors of the 19 century, like Sara Bernhardt, Eleonora Duse, Jean Mounet-Sully, and Mariya Zankovetskaya, have performed on the stage of the Odessa Russian Drama Theater. Lots of distinguished actors, writers and poets also visited and performed during the 20 century. Unforgettable masters like Liya Bugova, Pavel Mikhailov, Yevgeniy Kotov, Lidiya Polyakova, Nikolay Volkov and Boris Zaydenberg used to work in the troupe of the theater. Odessites of all ages, nationalities and professions willingly visit this cosy building in the very heart of the city. Within the last few years the theater has become a Russian cultural center which regular holds Russian evenings presenting meetings with favourite arts masters. The annual scientific and practical conferences "Russian theater in Ukraine" and the concomitant festival "Meetings in Odessa" have been held here for a few years already and all this prepares good ground for the further development of the Odessa Russian Theater. Its artistic management is also far from standard - today it is a collaboration of Moscow producers S. Golomazov, A.Litvin and A.Girba. Over recent years critics and audiences have been treated to sell-out performances like "Stepan Razin", "Viy", "Marriage", "The Man Who Laughs" and the playbill also attracts attention with other plays including "Seagull", "Hamlet" and works by Remarque, Stendhal, Molière, and Tolstoy. The theater also carries a tradition of staging works by Odessan authors, thus giving audiences an opportunity to see such performances as "Twilight of the Gods" by R.Fedenev, and "Maestro, you're on" by Y.Gimmelfarb. The writer, A.Mardan, whose works include the play "Waiting List", almost always has his new works staged in our theater.
